This Week in Mobile Payments

What a week for mobile! While hard at work over here at Bitmo HQ, we thought we’d recap the news in case you missed it (and it’s easy to miss). One second it’s the Wells Fargo PR disaster and the next it’s a must-have wire for — wait for it — your new wireless Air Pods. What a time to be alive…

  • Peer to peer payments go SMS! You can now send payments via Venmo, Square Cash, Circle, or your bitcoin wallet through iMessage for iOS 10. Add the apps you use by tapping the App Store icon near the keyboard and complete the entire transaction in seconds without ever leaving Messages. Just choose the app, type the amount, and send that cash-laden text.
  • Facebook is hot on Apple’s heels with its recent e-commerce integration with Messenger. If you happen to be one of the billion people using Messenger, you can make in-app purchases via chatbot. You can even send money to friends regardless of their payment preferences — international money transfer service Azimo just needs access to your friends list.
  • Apple will soon face another legal battle regarding its closed-NFC capabilities — this time from Seoul-based fintech firms. In short, Apple wants you to use Apple Pay for any contactless payment made with an iPhone. Naturally, developers aren’t happy with this digital stonewalling. You might not be either when you decide to go 100% mobile with your money.
  • Bitmo made the news! It may have gone to print a couple of weeks ago, but we’re still pretty excited to be featured in the San Diego Business Journal. Check out what Bitmo’s founder has to say about our vision and the everyday item he hates most. Stay ahead of the tech curve and download Bitmo on the App Store.
